Thanks for opening the digital door!! I'm not sure how to start, so I'll start:
During this last week, I spent the better half of my time online scouring for songs from a band called the Russians (no relation (to the
country of Russia, I mean. (they are from Northampton.))) The band's name is apparently a joke about the essentially apolitical stancethe
band members took when writing their songs, which feels like a funny way to be when you also call yourselves punks, but I digress. Good
music is good music.
These Northamptoners that called themselves Russians (pictured above) only have a couple of songs available on the web, three of which exist exclusively
in their live forms as part of a Peel session from 1979.
Two others are an A and B side from a single they released titled “No Title” and “Anything She Wants” that came out the following year.
I could only find one othersong they contributed to a 1981 punk comp titled “Northhampton Under Glass,” that song being "Shoplifting." Didn't see the
track posted on youtube, so post it I did!
They also have two other full tapes of music, but my search for these tapes ended as searches often do: on a seven year old online listing for one of
the tapes being sold for upwards of 200 dollars.. And since only a handful of them exist, there's a slim chance we’ll ever get to hear them. Those
damn creepy collectors!
